New Residential Construction, co-released by the United States Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), is a monthly report, also
known as "housing starts and building permits," comprising data on the construction of private residential structures, such as single-family homes and apartment buildings. This is national data on the number of new housing units authorized by building
permits; authorized, but not started; started; under construction; and completed. The data is for new, privately-owned housing units, excluding “HUD-code” manufactured (mobile) homes. The data is from the Building Permits Survey, and from the Survey of Construction, partially funded HUD. These surveys provide a key economic indicator for new residential construction derived from public records not subject to confidentiality restrictions. The surveys are our most current source of data on housing starts, completions, and sales. Businesses and investors rely upon these indicators to make daily decisions. It’s important to put economic indicators into a global context.
