New Residential Construction, also known as "housing starts and building permits," is a monthly report released by the Economics & Statistics Administration, U.S. Department of Commerce, from data co-gathered by the Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development comprising national data on the construction of private residential structures, such as single-family homes and apartment buildings. The data includes new housing units authorized by building permits; authorized, but not started; started; under construction; and completed. These are new, privately-owned housing units, excluding “HUD-code” manufactured (mobile) homes.
