The homeownership rate in the South was lower than the corresponding fourth quarter 2011 rate, while the rates in the Northeast, Midwest, and West were not statistically different from the rates a year ago. Rental Vacancy Rate - The rental vacancy rate in the fourth quarter 2012 (8.7 percent) was lower than the fourth quarter 2011 rate (9.4 percent). Homeowner Vacancy Rate - The homeowner vacancy rate in the fourth quarter 2012 (1.9 percent) was lower than the fourth quarter 2011 rate (2.3 percent).
